Term: The City
- It means: New York City
- Used in a sentence: “We’re going to go see a play and have dinner in the city this weekend”
Term: The Sound
- It means: Long Island Sound
- Used in a sentence: “We went fishing off the sound this past weekend”
Term: Port Jeff
- It means: Port Jefferson, a seaside hub with restaurants and shops on the other side of the water on Long Island. It’s a straight, 2 hour ride via the Bridgeport Ferry and a popular day-trip.
- Used in a sentence: “My parents are visiting over the 4th of July weekend and I was going to take them to Port Jeff for the day”
Term: The Valley
- It means: The towns surrounding the Naugatuck River and parts of Route 8 – Shelton, Ansonia, Derby, Seymour, Oxford, Beacon Falls, and Naugatuck
- Used in a sentence: “I used to live on near coast but moved up to the Valley two years ago”
Term: Down County
- It means: Cities in Connecticut that are close and in commuting distance to New York – think Greenwich, Stamford, and Norwalk. This section, or the little “foot” of Connecticut, would be considered Down County
- Used in a sentence: “I love living in Fairfield but work in the city so I need to find a home more Down County”
Term: Gold Coast
- It means: Affluent and wealthy towns and neighborhood on the coastline of Fairfield County. I always think of Westport when I think of the Gold Coast (fun fact: California also has a Gold Coast that is equally as wealthy and coastal, in Alameda)
- Used in a sentence: “I was scrolling Zillow and found my dream home, it’s on the Gold Coast of course!”
Term: The Tappan Zee
- It means: One of the many bridges that go over the Hudson River. I know it’s technically now called the “Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge,” but it will always be the Tappan Zee in our hearts (plus it’s just fun to say!)
- Used in a sentence: “Are you going to take the George Washington bridge or the Tappan Zee on your road trip?”
Term: Tri-State Area
- It means: The metropolitan areas in Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey. Think of it like Manhattan is the center, and the surrounding region includes areas that have plenty of housing and transportation into the city, and many restaurants, employment, and hot spots
- Used in a sentence: “I used to live in Staten Island but moved to Stamford – still a part of the tri-state area!”
