“Over 30 years ago, we stumbled upon a charming picture-perfect Cape circa 1834. It grabbed our hearts from the moment we stepped inside. That has never changed. 31 years later, we are still the people who stop in the doorway and count our blessings for the gift of this special property, everything it has become and everything it holds dear in the history of its walls.

That small Cape has been renovated, updated and expanded over the years to create the retreat it is today, but it’s core is loaded with history and it wears its age beautifully. Wide plank floorboards, worn soft in the places where a family walks the most. Exposed beams. Grand original fireplaces. Doorways that lean a little, floors that creak in a way you come to know by heart — the particular sound of a teenager coming home later than agreed, the particular sound of a child scooting downstairs on Christmas morning. Nothing here is perfectly square, and that is exactly the point. We have never once grown tired of the history of this space. If anything, we’ve grown more protective of it. We’ve taken care to keep every improvement in conversation with the original house rather than in argument with it. We have worked very hard to maintain all of the character and charm while simultaneously adding modern amenities and improvements that enhanced but never detracted from the feeling and flow.

We raised our two children here. They came home to this house as newborns, learned to walk on these floors, did homework at this counter, walked and rode bikes to school, had their friends underfoot for years and years, and left from this front door for college and for the lives they’ve built since. Every stage of that
happened inside these walls, and this house made room for all of it. Dogs, childhood, birthdays, friends, life – we experienced it all under this roof.
The kitchen renovation changed everything. Opening it up transformed how the whole house lives — suddenly the cook was never alone, homework and dinner prep and conversation all happened in the same warm room, and the kitchen became the true center of gravity for the entire home. It is where everyone still ends up, no matter how much other space there is. It is where the parties always begin and, invariably, where the last people are still standing at the end of the night.

We have filled this house with people for three decades. Holiday dinners with the dining room table extended to accommodate 16, all vying for a spot closest to the fire. Shucking hundreds of oysters at the outdoor kitchen for our numerous family reunions. Our annual white party hosting an entire college lacrosse team that lasts all weekend. Neighbors, teammates, roommates, in-laws, old friends, new friends. We have never been able to count the gatherings, and we’ve never wanted to. What we can say is that this home has been filled, again and again, with love and food and joy — and that it has always been generous enough to hold whatever we asked of it.

The attached barn is the project we poured our whole hearts into. Renovating it expanded everything the property could do. It gave us room to entertain on a larger scale as well as a private and serene loft space to work from home — beams, light, quiet, and complete separation from the rest of the house — a projector on the wall for movie nights, big games, and rainy afternoons. It also gave guests a true retreat, a place to land with real privacy. The built-in bar has served for family nights, celebrations and many a dance party, and just as meaningfully for the quiet ones: two people, a chessboard, a fire, music playing, nowhere else to be.

Outside, the outdoor kitchen and the outdoor fireplace gave us a second season of entertaining. So many nights under the stars: graduation parties, birthdays, anniversaries, engagement toasts, send-offs and welcome-homes. Long dinners that turned into long conversations that always led to our daughter
adding one more log to the fire. Those evenings are some of the very best memories we have here.

The setting is private and secluded, which is more rare than people realize and impossible to add later. The gardens are the work of well over thirty years — mature plantings, established structure, and pops of color that carry from the first bulbs of spring through the last of the fall. There are hidden areas throughout, small rooms outdoors that feel like a warm embrace in nearly every season: A front porch that feels like a living space and is the choice spot for a good summer rain storm. A tree swing that has carried toddlers and grandmas with a gentle push and a smile. An outdoor shower, the practical answer to sandy children coming home from the beach and dogs with muddy paws. And a simple glass of wine at the end of the day by the outdoor fireplace.

What we would most want the next family to understand is how flexible this house is. It has absorbed everything we’ve thrown at it — extended family for long stays, houseguests, work and colleagues, small children and then busy teenagers with cars and friends who never left. There is always somewhere to be
together and always somewhere to be alone. Very few homes do both.

Everything about this property is special. The neighbors, locations, school system – all of it checks any box you can think of. We have loved it, cared for it, and grown up alongside it. We are proud of what it has become, and we know we’re leaving a piece of our hearts behind as we take our next step forward. We hope it is loved as well and as long as we have loved it. We leave it to the next owners with walls filled with love in the hopes that they can add their own story to its long and beautiful history.”
